The establishment of the European Union came about as a result of the Region’s recognition that the devastation of the Second World War called for the unification of Europe. The foregoing came into being as a result of the Schumann Declaration that became the basis for the creation of the EU. (Wikipedia, 2005). Originally known as the European Economic Community, or EEC, the European Union began as a customs union that was founded on its ability to move goods and services as well as capital and people. In 1957 The Treaty of Rome established the European Community that evolved into the European Union.
