Health care sector has progressed rapidly in last few decades with more complexity and instrumentation for better delivery of health care. This complexity has made its user patient, confused with the generation of various negative feeling in patients’ mind. Providing information in a proper understandable way has become an important factor for decreasing confusion and developing good professional relation in health care. Roger (1975) explained the necessity of good communication between the individuals involved in health care for better health outcome. He explained communication as transfer of information from source to receiver.
All species on earth, from unicellular bacteria to complex animal like human, communicate with each other (Wall 1995). Human communication differs from animal communication as they use symbols and languages with involvement of human feeling, attitudes and information. Human communication is an ongoing, continuous, dynamic and ever-changing process. Berlo (1960) mentioned that human communication is transactional implying an interaction affecting both individuals in conversation. Dance (1967) stated that although all human communication is communication, not all communication is human communication. Communication related to health care matters is called health communication which is the subset of the human communication (Helman 1995)
Communication can be interpersonal in which two persons are involved. It can be in small group for clinical management or organization for hospital administration and staff relations. Health professional educating public by presenting speeches is a part of public communication. Communication can be in the form of verbal, non-verbal or written, personal and impersonal, issue oriented or relationship oriented. Content of communication, the mode of presenting this communication and the situation in which communication takes place are deciding factors for outcome of consultation. Emphasis on various aspects of communication like empathy, control, trust, self disclosure and confirmation produces favorable results in clinical encounter. (Hope 1996)
